The Torso, a machine performance, 1996

The Torso was a celebration of the amazing work machines which are still in use on the
Russian scrapyard Bto Met: Especially interesting was the twelve meter tall wooden tower
on rails.Meant for brute crushing, it houses an immense metal weight which simply falls
from this height onto the scrap. A fascinating and raw system to flatten cast metal parts.

The group made a solid metal torso which was lowered by a magnetic crane into the crushing
ditch. Then the wooden tower drove over the ditch. Falling from ten meters in height, the
two-ton iron globe crushed the torso completely. The whole performance was accompanied
by the stunning sounds of the machines.
